Taiwan Bullet Train

Image

Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) system runs approximately 345 km (214 mi) along the west coast of Taiwan from the national capital Taipei to the southern city of Kaohsiung. In it’s first three years in business the THSR carried its first 100 million passengers and in the follow two years broke the 200 million mark. The THSR runs at a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph) from Taipei to Zuoying in as little as 96 minutes, reaching almost 90% of Taiwan’s population. These trains are very smooth, when I road it, the experience was more like air travel, the service is similar, and I loved it! If we had High Speed Rail in the USA; I would be a passenger, no doubt about it. If you want a cool experience, try the THSR for yourself.

Man’s Best Friend

Man’s Best Friend, of course! Dogs are great, no doubt about it! With that said here are my favorite quotes about dogs;
“The better I get to know men, the more I find myself loving dogs.”- Charles De Gaull
“The only creatures that are evolved enough to convey pure love are dogs and infants.”- Johnny Depp.

Sunset Sailing

There is nothing like sailing in solitude at sunset on San Diego bay, simply beautiful! This is the Embarcadero, which is the same location as the San Diego maritime museum, the downtown waterfront, harbor cruises, etc. A great place to explore! Let me digress for a moment, but if you want great seafood with this awesome view, it’s Anthony’s Fish Grotto 🙂 I did not receive any payola for this mention. I love just walking around this part of San Diego; it also has some great photo ops and is very tranquil. I was very lucky to grow up here, what a childhood.

The Pennsylvania Amish

Posted on

Image

The Pennsylvania Amish in Lancaster County dates back to the 16th century Reformation in Europe, when the Anabaptist movement spurred the creation of three “plain” communities: the Amish, Mennonites and Brethren. Although these spiritual groups have similarities, the Amish are the most conservative, emphasizing humility, family, community and separation from the non-Amish world, which includes a reluctance to adopt modern conveniences such as electricity. This community is so charming and interesting to visit; everyone was so humble and friendly. We eat lunch at an Amish style cafe and the food was excellent! We plan on going back for a longer visit.

It’s a Bird – It’s a Plane – It’s a Flying Tourist?

What made this interesting to me, I noticed after I looked at the image, at a much later time. This tourist was with his girlfriend and I was shooting people playing in the surf, when I herd him say to her; let’s see how high I can get my feet off the ground…I thought this might be interesting, I turned around and captured his second attempt! What made this image even more interesting was the lack of reaction from the people a few feet away in the background…then I remembered, this is Southern California, nothing fazes them.

Bus Through China

We were on a bus tour through China, and this was leaving Nanjing after a long day of sightseeing. Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu province in Eastern China, having been the capital of China on several occasions. Its present name means “Southern Capital”.  With an urban population of over seven million (2011), Nanjing is the second-largest commercial center in the East China region after Shanghai, that is we were headed next. Being one of the four ancient capitals of China, Nanjing has always been a cultural center attracting intellectuals from all over the country. It’s definitely worth the visit; we really enjoyed it, the art, food, and great local beer!

No Lifeguard On Duty!

Posted on Updated on

Image

No Lifeguard on duty, that’s the time of year we are in, the summer is over, the tourist are all gone, and one’s regular life has taken over. The good part is we are entering my favorite time of the year, the fall season entering into winter. Fall and spring are my most anticipated seasons, because I love the transition from one season into the other, it’s mild and exciting to watch Mother Nature in all her glory. These seasons also reminds me of the seasons of our life, a season to prepare, a season to plant, a season to grow, a season to harvest, and It starts again. We have seasons of life with each one being special and different, yet every one just as important as the other. It’s our life cycle; it’s how you handle every season that defines one’s life and legacy. I often reflect on the previous season, I meditate on what did I learn from it, and what must I do to have a more productive season that I’m entering into. It’s a great time for personal reflection and a time to share your experiences with your friends and family, hopefully they learn from your experiences, especially your children, they  are the ones who should benefit from these past seasons, life’s lesions are something truly worth passing down through your families generations. Don’t be silent, don’t hide from your accomplishments, or your mistakes, every experience you have had is what makes you who you are today, the person your family and friends love. You are the result of these seasons you have lived through? Share, share, share, don’t be silent, don’t be too proud, or too embarrassed, be the leader you were born to be, pass it down, and you will find great peace, and blessings for generations to come.

Changing of the Guard in Taipei

Posted on Updated on

Image

Built on Chingshan Mountain and overseeing the Keelung River in Taipei’s Zhongshan District in 1969. The architecture is beautiful, the history is significant in Taiwan’s past, honoring its fallen soldiers, but the real show is the changing of the guard. Even though the first ceremony takes place around 9am, you will never be alone, it’s always crowded as you can see in my photo.  It’s a cool ceremony, rich in tradition, one that I would recommend to anyone that is able to experience it. After you enjoy the Shrine, across the street is a great little farmers market with really fresh fruit, yummy!

Rush Hour in Taipei

Rush Hour in Tamsui District, Taiwan. This was taken in the Dunshui district, now known as the Tamsui district, or 45 mins north of Taipei, Taiwan. The district is home to three universities and has a large role in Taiwanese culture, with a great night market. I shot this right when I got off the train, I was walking and noticed how much traffic there was, but how many motor bikes and scooters there were, amazing! I love the depth of the image, how you can see so many people all at the same light waiting, but all in such different ways. This is why I love candid people images, I hope you like this as much as I do. I received the judges choice award from the S4C (Southern California Council of Camera Clubs) in the Travel/ Transportation division.

Caught Looking!

Posted on Updated on

Image

Caught Looking at La Jolla Shores, California. I found this more interesting not because of the beautiful beach, not the surfers in the background, not the kids playing, nope! It’s fun because mister cool got caught by the girlfriend looking at the other girl. They were holding hands a second before that image was captured. That’s why I enjoy photographing candid people pics; you never know what you’re going to get at any given time. Every day is different, the people and the weather are constantly in a state of flux. When I look at people pics, it’s more fun to look deep into the image beyond the obvious main charters, and look through the multiple layers of that image, that’s what I find fun!
